Wernicke syndrome and Korsakoff syndrome are related disorders that often occur due to a deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1). Wernicke's syndrome, also known as Wernicke encephalopathy, is a neurological disease characterized by the clinical triad of confusion, the inability to coordinate voluntary movement (ataxia), and eye (ocular) abnormalities. Korsakoff's syndrome is a mental disorder characterized by disproportionate memory loss in relation to other mental aspects. Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome results from thiamine deficiency. It is generally agreed that Wernicke encephalopathy results from severe acute deficiency of thiamine ( vitamin B 1 ), whilst Korsakoff's psychosis is a chronic neurologic sequela of Wernicke encephalopathy. Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is the combination of two conditions with separate stages: Wernicke's encephalopathy and Korsakoff syndrome. Both are caused by damaged parts of the brain due to a lack of vitamin B1 (thiamine). Alcoholics are prone to developing this condition because they usually have poor nutrition, and a decreased ability to properly absorb nutrients.
The term refers to two different syndromes, each representing a different stage of the disease. Wernicke's encephalopathy represents the "acute" phase and Korsakoff's syndrome represents the "chronic" phase. [1] Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome is the combined presence of Wernicke encephalopathy and alcoholic Korsakoff syndrome. Due to the close relationship between these two disorders, people with either are usually diagnosed with WKS as a single syndrome. It mainly causes vision changes, ataxia and impaired memory. The cause of the disorder is thiamine deficiency. This can occur due to Wernicke encephalopathy, eating disorders, malnutrition, and alcoholic Korsakoff syndrome.

Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is a neurodegenerative disorder that is caused by a severe thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. Parts of the brain may be damaged as a result of this deficiency, causing increased difficulty with memory, movement, vision and coordination.

Very rarely, Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome can be caused by factors other than alcohol.
Korsakoff syndrome is a chronic memory disorder caused by severe deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B-1) and is commonly caused by alcohol misuse.
